This history of punch drinks varies widely as with many kinds of foods. Some say that it's origin comes from Britain dating back to the 17th century, where "punch" referred to a 72 gallon barrel which punch could be made. Another is Persia where the meaning of the word "punch" is five, because five ingredients were originally combined to form this beverage.
